The best scenic drives in the Black Hills

  • 1 min read

The roads of the Black Hills are attractions in their own right. Several were designed by Peter Norbeck, the South Dakota governor and senator who wanted visitors to see the hills at their best, even if that meant slow curves, one-lane tunnels and corkscrew bridges.

The Needles Highway

Highway 87 through Custer State Park twists for 14 miles between granite spires and through tunnels just over 8 feet wide. It is closed in winter. Read our guide to the Needles Highway.

The Iron Mountain Road

US 16A between Custer State Park and Keystone is famous for its pigtail bridges, which loop over themselves to gain height, and for tunnels that frame Mount Rushmore. See the Iron Mountain Road.

The Wildlife Loop Road

An 18-mile loop through the prairie of southern Custer State Park, where bison, pronghorn and burros share the road. Read our Wildlife Loop guide.

The Peter Norbeck Scenic Byway

Together, the Needles Highway, the Iron Mountain Road, Highway 244 past Mount Rushmore and the road to Sylvan Lake form a loop of about 70 miles. Driven in one day, with stops, it is one of the finest road trips in the country.

Spearfish Canyon

In the northern hills, US 14A follows Spearfish Creek for about 20 miles between limestone cliffs, passing Bridal Veil Falls and the turn for Roughlock Falls. It is glorious in early October, when the aspens and birches turn gold. Combine it with Deadwood for a day trip from Custer.

Driving tips

  • Check the tunnel dimensions before taking an RV, trailer or bus on the Needles Highway or the Iron Mountain Road.
  • Drive early in the morning to avoid traffic and see more wildlife.
  • Use pull-offs for photos, and never stop in a tunnel or on a curve.
  • Expect motorcycles, especially in August during the Sturgis Rally.
